The Great Fly Collection of 2012: Streamers & Baitfish

February 28, 2012 by n.taylor 8 Comments

I’ve never been one to carry a multitude of different streamers. Perhaps I have not been properly schooled in the ancient arts but I have always just carried a few basic streamer patterns. I love the addition of his rubber tails which incorporates everything that works on a Meatwhistle and adds a little bit of McKittrick’s Jawbreaker.

A few saltwater patterns Scott tied up this winter in hopes of making it to the ocean during 2012.

    Nate,

That is one nice flats box. I am glad someone else uses the egg successfully, Lonny likes it. Just a nondescript fly that can work well. I don’t use the Swimming Nymph, the hackle always forces the fly to ride with that peacock herl on the bottom unless I’ve a ton of weight on it. How do you manage to have it ride correctly, or do you, or am I missing something?

it is designed to ride hook up so it doesn’t get snagged on the bottom. I think the fish take the hackle for legs going everywhere. You can tie the fly in “reverse” with the peacock on the “bottom” of the hook if you want that to ride up. I’ve tried it both ways and it works well both ways. Sometimes I think the peacock works better being the visible side, I think it is ultimately a personal preference.

    Nate,

What members of the flats box have been consistent for carp? Nice and more nice, thought I had a lot of flies!

Its still been a lot of worms for me so far with a clouser nymph here and there. I used a few eggs and the one you gave me now belongs to a nice carp somewhere here in Denver. Sorry…

Thanks, I’ll pass along the love to Scott! You and I have similar tastes in streamers I see…

    Sweet Nate,

I carry streamers but use them rarely, nasty habit of carrying too many flies and optimism, but ya never know. I love the double bunny, the Closer Deep Minnow tied the way it’s supposed to be and the classic muddler, among many others. Nice collection all the way around!
