Hotel Fish
Hotel Fish

I haven’t been fishing much yet this year, but I assure you this trend has come to an end. Next weekend I will be heading out to meet up with almost a dozen people to go fishing around Gunnison and then the summer will be here before we know it. I have spent a lot of time tying flies this winter and getting the chance to use them has gotten me extremely excited. This morning I started off with a few streamers I had tied up this winter and within a dozen casts landed this thing. I guess this is a palomino trout, I have never caught one before, but now it is crossed off my list. It reminds me of a “hotel fish” or a coy fish but whatever, I think it looks cool.

Other than a few egg patterns that I tried I stuck with the streamers to confirm to myself that I am an extremely mediocre tier (rumor confirmed). Most of my little guys were just variations of the John Barr’s Meatwhistle which happens to be one of my favorite flies at the moment. I convinced a few fish to give them a chance with most of them getting away or tearing my humble creation to shreds, continually illuminating my inferior fly construction.

I have always been a slow starter (not like the Red Sox but still) and if there is something that I hate more than mayonnaise it is being cold…fishing in the winter means that you are really cold. I can count with one hand the number of good days I have had fishing so far this year, but am looking forward to doubling that over the next two weeks. So while I brush off the rust and prepare for a lengthy season, one thing made me smile today. It appears that the Fishing Gods still may be looking upon me with relative favor, as they gave me my first gift this year. Good luck, may a fantastic season begin!
