May The Low Water Begin

Because we don’t have snow in Colorado this year smart people predicted a significant water shortage. While this will impact the fishing in July and August, right now everything is fishing quite well. The carp fishing is ahead of schedule with the river in town still low and clear and the ponds having respectable visibility for mid May.

The Colorado at Kremmling is at 372 CFS…372. The Salmonflies are popping and the water is not only fishable but you can actually wade across the river. This might be the most fun salmonfly hatch we’ve had in Colorado since I moved here. All in all I think I’ll try to take advantage of this low water before it ruins the back end of the fishing season.

What is freaking me out is that I am actually going to get to see the full-on no holds barred DSP spawn in all it’s glory. Seems like the real hot and heavy rated X stuff usually happen under the cover of mud. But I saw a preview this week and it was fascinating.

What is freaking me out is the fact that the river looks so damn good and we are in the middle of “runoff”. I think we might be in for a long season, which is awesome.

Nice fish Nate! Mellow Yellow I presume? We have had a good snow year here and the trout rivers will do well. Our best salmonfly river was good for me 15 plus years ago, now it is the domain of boneheads. I don’t miss that too bad anyway but wish you luck.

Indeed it was Gregg! You guys actually got snow this year, looking forward to getting up north here I a couple of weeks. Hopefully I can avoid some boneheads and get after it tomorrow.
