Looking for 2012

The remainder of 2011 is a non event for me. Things are frozen pretty solid and while I could still fish, it is nothing like what it will be in the spring or summer. Instead, I’m using my time earning brownie points, tying flies, and putting Adam Smith’s theories in practice.

I have this vision of creating my own fly shop of sorts on my bookshelf. You know, a few bins with my favorite flies so when someone calls me I can head over to the ole’ stash, throw a few in the box, and I’m off to the river. I got to working on this theory this weekend and I got about 50 flies done this weekend to fill my nice little bins. Carp of 2012 be wary, I’m coming next year and I promise it is going to get ugly.

Nate we need more posts! Its a long, cold and monotonous winter at the desk here out east, and I crave the ray of hope that manifests itself in your fly-fising insights.

HA! I am actually going to TRY to keep it simpler with fewer flies. I’ve actually thought, well, if my house burns down while i’m away I’ve got much of my fishing stuff. Got to work on both things I think.

I don’t really know how many flies you have in stock and arranged in boxes. I LIKE what I see above though. I was after winter carp the 4th. and in this still water pond I could have honestly used 2 patterns and 6 flies. I wrote McTage that I did use 6 flies but only because I lost 2 to a snag, but after cleaning my gear the next day I decided to count what I did carry, 214 flies, about normal for me, and all carp flies, so larger sorts. You never know when the occasion might arise when thousands of fish suddenly lose all caution and you need everything you carry. Of course I jest. I like to be ready though. I have a lot of flies and love to tie, and tie for my boys, carp afficionados as well. So I have storage boxes to grab flies from and stocked ones to grab. A caution, one day I looked in a long unused box and found anything dubbed or with rabbit tails was eaten by moths. I destroyed at least 50-100 flies for their beads or eyes. I’m on a roll here, I just appreciated the look of yours ready to go and tied. Hope your new fishing year is a bountiful one!

Thanks a lot Gregg, I’m hoping for a good one too. I’m glad that someone else out there feels the same way I do! As far as moths go right now I have mine on a bookshelf in plain view so I shouldn’t have to worry about that for awhile until my girlfriend changes her mind and decides that I can no longer keep my toys in the living room. I really don’t carry that many types of patterns, just a grip load of the ones that I like. I have ones with a little weight, a lot of weight, no weight, and then different colors. I got so bad carrying trout flies that with carping I just want to keep it simple. I like that I can grab one or two boxes of flies, a bottle of water from the sink, and be on the water in 12 minutes from my house. Part of the beauty of it for me.

Good luck, hope you can pull it off. Somehow I always end up living hand to mouth on my favorite flies. It sure would be nice to have a couple of hundred flies all setup and ready for the season.

I would love nothing more than a quick weekend in Oregon. As much as I love the stench of rural Denver the endless flats of Oregon draw me as much as any fishing destination I can think of. I seriously might take you up on that.

Yeah, same way here Nate. I just got fed up with constantly arranging my fly boxes, and just switched over to a bin to keep my flies. Honestly, I used to only tie a few here and there, but now I’m trying to tie out a half dozen on each pattern as well. No more staying up all night before a trip tying flies in 2012 is my resolution! Yeah, I hear you. It makes so much sense it is stupid, but getting everything out to tie a specific pattern and then tying that over and over and over until you have a dozen or two ultimately is a much better use of time. We will see how effective this turns out to be but I am optimistic.
